Tips & Tricks to Prepare Your A/C for the Winter

Aug 27, 2021 | Uncategorized

With fall coming next month, it is about time to start thinking about getting your home A/C unit prepared for winter, especially with Ohio’s winters, which can be unpredictable. Nevertheless, all of us tend to hibernate in our homes for warmth and shelter. However, since your A/C unit is located outside, many homeowners neglect this essential HVAC equipment maintenance during the winter. So, before you turn on your furnace for the next few months, you need to take some steps. Fortunately, our friendly and knowledgeable technicians at LRF Maintenance, Heating & Cooling have come up with the most important steps you must follow to keep your AC in Five Star shape for next summer!

Here are a couple of quick and easy tips and tricks that any homeowner can do to prepare your A/C for the cold winter weather:

Turn Off Your A/C Correctly

What most homeowners don’t know is that your AC is more than just the parts and equipment located inside your home. Moreover, just turning off your thermostat won’t do the trick either. Thus, you need to shut your A/C down from the inside and outside. If this step is not completed, your condenser unit will continue to run and will cause problems going into next year. So, to completely turn off your A/C and all of its parts, first, turn off your thermostat completely. Then locate your home residential breaker box. Then switch the fuse to “off” that is connected to your outside A/C unit. Doing so will turn off all the power connected to your outside AC unit and will allow you to safely turn on your “heat” through your thermostat and furnace.

Inspect and Clean Condenser Unit

Another important task to do is to clean and inspect the condenser. This can be found in your A/C unit outside. You will want to complete this task before the cold weather hits and leaves your unit and coils covered with snow and ice. To properly clean the coils, use a garden hose to remove any and all leaves, dirt, or debris. After this is complete, let it dry and carefully inspect your unit for any rust or cracks; if you see anything that looks concerning, contact LRF Maintenance, Heating & Cooling ASAP. However, if all looks well, go ahead and cover your unit, and you are ready for winter!
